Regular Season Practice (February 16 - September 2008)
Saturdays: 8:30 am All levels welcome Sundays: 7:30 am Newbies and Recreational paddlers practice
    8:30 am All levels welcome

Practice starts with some light calisthenics and stretching on land to warm up followed by 60-90 minutes of on the water training. People who are new are encouraged to paddle as much or as little as they are comfortable with. You can stop and rest whenever you like but most people choose to stay the whole practice. We can accommodate people who need to leave early, but normally expect to be finished around 11 am.

    Daylight Savings Time

We typically have a weekday practice on Wednesdays 6:00-8:00 pm or until dark during the summer.

Off Season Practice (October - January)

Many Guppies like to continue paddling during the wintertime so we often have one practice on the weekends this time of year. Please contact us for specific information on practice times during this time of year.

Driving Directions to Naples Island, Long Beach, California :

  • Click [ here ] for a Google Map of our location.
(Google Maps will open in a new browser.)
  • From North of Long Beach take I-405 south or I-605 south.

From South of Long Beach take I-405 north or 22 west.

From any of these freeways, exit 7th St. (22 west).

Take the first exit on the right, Studebaker Ave. (it comes up quickly).

Follow the ramp to the light at the end. Turn left onto Studebaker.

Take Studebaker until it comes to a T at Westminster Blvd. Turn right.

(At Pacific Coast Highway, Westminster turns into 2nd St. Continue straight.)

Get in the right lane as you cross over the 2nd St. bridge and on the downward side of the bridge take the Appian Way off-ramp on the right.

At the bottom of the ramp, turn right onto Appian Way. (See map below.)

Continue on Appian and drive under the 2nd St. bridge. At the stop sign turn left into the free parking lot. If possible, park in the lot nearest the 2nd St. bridge.

PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THE NEARBY STREETS. We want to maintain good relations with the neighbors.

Walk back under the 2nd St. bridge on Appian a couple minutes to Mother’s Beach. (See the map above.) The team assembles under the trees on the grassy area next to the Mother’s Beach metered lot. We’re quite friendly.

What to bring to practice :

    • Hat, sunblock for protection from the sun
    • Water to keep you hydrated during practice
    • Running shoes for warm up session before practice
    • Comfortable clothes–cotton shorts or sweat pants, tank tops or T-shirts. (You will get warm during the warm-ups and exercises. Also you may get wet on the boat–after all, it’s a water sport.)
    • Aqua socks or water-proof sandals (recommended) to wear on the boat
    • Sunglasses — it’s bright out there and you may get splashed. If they’re expensive or you wear prescription glasses, you might want to being a cord in case they come off when you paddle.
    • A towel to dry yourself afterwards
    • A change of dry clothes for after-practice lunch or the drive home. (We often go out to eat after practice, and all are invited.)
